Discussion on the theory of “The Tripartite Soul”

Plato’s tripartite soul is a theory of human soul.Through this theory he wants to give an idea of a just soul.In this theory he divides human soul into three parts. These three parts are-spirited elements, bodily appetites and reason. In his book “Republic” he gives two examples to describe the theory. In one of his examples,he compares the human figure with a chariot with two horses. One horse is good, which is simply guided by charioteer. The other is bad and uncontrollable. Here the good horse is compared with spirited element and the bad one is compared with bodily appetites. In this example, charioteer is the symbol of reason or intellectual faculty of human mind. Here the charioteer is pulling at the two horses to hold the balance of the chariot.Three conflicting elements of human soul are portrayed here.By this example he wants to make people understand that- bodily appetites and spirited elements should be dictated by reason.According to Plato morality consists in maintaining the balance between rational and irrational elements of the soul. This balance can bring justice to the soul and the product of this justice is happiness.Plato would like to have a just society and the society is formed by people. If someone’s soul is just,he can form a just society. That’s why Plato emphasises on forming a just soul.
